Italians refer to Cortona as the "Mother of Troy and Grandmother of Rome,” and if you spend just a few hours in this spectacular location, you’ll soon see why.
Our tour of Cortona, one of Italy’s most ancient towns, takes in the sights and sounds of this magnificent city and allows you to step off the beaten tracked to uncover some hidden gems. Led by our expert bilingual guide, you’ll explore a magical, spiritual trail through woodland and the cells of St. Francis, through to the city’s fortress. There you will enjoy lunch at one of Tuscany’s best restaurants as you take in the amazing views of the surrounding area.
After lunch, you will be treated to a journey of discovery as you learn about the area’s art and history. We’ll start by walking to Poggio, where we will explore one of the city’s most renowned churches, San Niccolò, a medieval tower that bears the famous banner of Luca Signorelli. We will then visit places of interest in the main square of the city and learn more about the historical stories of this majestic town through visiting the local speciality stores, which stock an interesting array of local wines, ceramics, and cuisines.
Cortona is a great place to explore as part of a visit to Tuscany because of its rich and varied history. Located approximately 50 miles to the South of Florence, approximately 130 miles North of Rome, it has deep Etruscan roots that can be traced as far back as the 4th Century BC. Visitors to Cortona will enjoy exploring the maze of streets and delight at the amazing views of the surrounding valley that are presented at every turn.
Our tour will commence at 10:00 am at Camucia-Cortona, where you’ll be met by the day’s first tour guide, a local expert who has intimate knowledge of Cortona and the surrounding area. He will lead you on an hour walking, stopping off at points of interest and beauty along the way.
At 1:00 pm we will take a much-deserved stop for lunch Cortona’s best local Locanda, where you will have an opportunity to enjoy a sumptuous three-course lunch with wine and coffee.
At 2:30 pm, a second tour guide will arrive to take you on a further exploration of the area’s fascinating church of San Niccolo, a Romantic-style building that was constructed in the 15th Century. This mesmerizing building underwent further work in the 16th and 17th centuries and offers visitors a wealth of architectural marvels to explore. The church has a long and interesting history. In the 1200s, the Claires Franciscan order was founded here while St. Francis was still alive.
After this enlightening experience, we will progress to the Palazzo del Comune, Cortona’s main square, where you can lose yourself in the various local shops, bars and restaurants. We’ll finish the tour at 5:30 pm, when we stop at a jewellery store to drink a delicious Prosecco in a glass made of pure leaf silver or gold while learning about the ancient processing techniques that are used to produce the gold. This is a fantastic tour that will leave a lasting impression.
