Sunday: Relax with the most beautiful natural hot springs and the beauty of tuffs old villages
Pitigliano, Sovana, Saturnia hot spring
Today we will start the tour visiting two or three of the Etruscan villages in south of Tuscany. The most important centre for the Etruscan era is Sovana, where the necropolis are their monumental rupestrian tombs are a typical feature; the Ildebrando, the tombs of Tifone and Sirena and many others.The quaint old town of Pitigliano is known as the little Jerusalem,for the historical presence of a Jewish community that has always been well integrated into the social context and that have their own Synagogue.
After a visit of those Etruscan villages, it is the time to relax and experience one of the most beautiful natural spring of Tuscany. Saturnia is a small town in the municipality of Manciano in Maremma, that stands on top of a hill overlooking the famous thermal springs. What turns Saturnia into an attractive destination are its famous thermal springs. Saturnia's thermal baths are made of several springs stretching from Mount Amiata to the hills of Albenga and Fiora and reaching Roselle and Talamone. The warm sulphurous waters of Saturnia were well-known by the Etruscans and Romans. The thermal waters have a temperature of 37.5 °c and therapeutic and relaxing properties.
You can then decide to come back to the accommodation for a lovely dinner or in a different Tuscany trattoria nearby the accommodation recommended from the tour manager.
Monday: Montefollonico, Pienza , Montepulciano
Wine, cheese and stunning Tuscany landscapes
The beautiful and untouched landscape is the absolute protagonist in Val d’Orcia.
This area of Tuscany boasts of endless rolling hills covered with grain or sunflowers, a rich green valley which encompasses the Orcia river, from which the zone derives its name, and don’t forget the vineyards for the renowned wines of Nobile of Montepulciano and the newcomer on the market, the Val d’Orcia DOC. It is no wonder that this territory, which stretches along the provinces of Siena and Grosseto, is protected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Today, our tour manager/driver will take you over some of the most famous villages of Tuscany. We will start from Monefollonico for a coffe break and then we will move to Montepulciano where we will stop for lunch and some wine tasting of Nobile of Montepulciano. You will have a chance to visit some spectacular historical Etruscan cellars and walking though the main road “Corso” full of artisan shops.
Before coming back to the accommodation, we will stop to Pienza. The Perfect Mix of Architecture, Food & Tradition built to represent the "Utopian City". Pienza enjoys a strategic position standing high atop a hill, dominating all the Orcia Valley with extraordinary views. This charming village is widely known as the "ideal city of the Renaissance", the creation of the great humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini who later became Pope Pius II. Pienza is also the city of cacio, which means cheese! The Pecorino of Pienza is a tasty cheese made from sheep's milk, renowned worldwide and delicious, which can go from a delicate flavor to a decisive one based on how aged it is. The town streets are full of small charming shops selling a large quantity of various types of pecorino, from fresh to aged pecorico, that you can taste together with a number of other typical local products, such as fine wines, spices, pici (handmade pasta) and so on.
Tuesday: Cooking Class or Siena
Cooking class —-> Firenze —>
On the third day of our tour, you can choose between enjoying a cooking class with our local chef with whom you will prepare your dinner and enjoying the morning relaxing at the pool, or we will take you to the train station of Montepulciano to Siena by train. From June to September we will be joining the local villagers as they enjoy their vibrant summer festivals.
Wednesday: Monteriggioni & San Gimignano
Monteriggioni represents one of the most important walled castles in the territory. It has incredibly preserved an intact structure as if time had never passed on the hill from which it elegantly dominates the surrounding landscape. The castle was built by the Sienese between 1213 and 1219 for defensive purposes: its strategic location atop a hill overlooking the Cassia Road allowed the castle to control the cities of the Val d’Elsa and Staggia and be on the lookout for any armies approaching Siena. The reputation and prestige of this particular castle has a very consolidated notoriety because Monteriggioni was cited by the “Supreme Poet” Dante Alighieri in his most famous work, The Divine Comedy.
Our day will start driving to Monteriggioni for a visit of the castle. Then will stop in one of the run family business farmhouse for a wine tasting and lunch in san Gimignano, before the visit of the village. At this farm you will have a chance to try the most famous Tuscany white wine La Vernaccia.
San Gimignano, a small walled village about halfway between Florence and Siena, is famous for its fascinating medieval architecture and towers that rise above of all the other buildings offering an impressive view of the city from the surrounding valley.
At the height of its glory, San Gimignano's patrician families had built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990, San Gimignano offers visitors the chance to step back in time while enjoying its local products including saffron and its white wine, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
You can then decide to come back to the accommodation for a lovely dinner or in a different Tuscany trattoria nearby the accommodation recommended from the tour manager
Thursday: Brunello di Montalcino & Natural hot spring
—> Montalcino —-> Montichiello—> San Filippo
Today, we will visit Montichiello which is a tiny fortified medieval village known as the “terrazza della Val’ Orcia” - the terrace of Val d’Orcia. It is a small centre in the heart of the Orcia valley whose beauty derives from its geographical position and the harmonious integration of its medieval architecture, and wide, well-proportioned spaces, which give the impression of moving around a large house.
Later we will go to San Filippo natural hot spring: that most foreign visitors still don't know about (and that locals are trying to keep a secret from us): the outdoor hot springs at San Filippo! The springs at San Filippo are gorgeous! You can see that from the pictures, of course ;-). The calciferous formations, waterfalls and small pools of hot water surrounded by the woods just outside the small town of Bagni San Filippo in the Val d'Orcia will seem to take you to another world. The good thing is that there is an easy path that runs along the river and provides easy access. The waterfall is called the White Whale for its similarity to the mouth of a whale. The calcium formation is the most impressive formation at the hot springs of San Filippo, and while you can walk on them, take special care of where you put your feet. The springs surge out of the ground nearby, coming out at 48°C, so the water at the White Whale is warm - very warm which permits bathing in fall and winter.
After spending some hours relaxing at the natural spring, it is the time to move to the last village of Montalcino before coming back to the accommodation. Montalcino is renowned for Brunello di Montalcino, a red wine that is widely regarded as one of the top three red wines in the world. You’ll have an opportunity to learn more about this wine with a visit to one of the region’s most prestigious winery and cellars.
